Using simple techniques, Ms. Tran Thi Yen (Phu Xuan village, Dak Nia commune, Gia Nghia town, Dak Nong province) has managed to make oranges and tangerines bear fruit out of season, earning billions of dong each year.

On her 2-hectare plot of land, Ms. Yen researched and learned techniques for growing citrus fruits. She also sought advice from experts on cultivating this crop locally. After determining the soil conditions were suitable, Ms. Yen didn't hesitate to borrow over 2 billion VND to invest in her orange cultivation project.

It wasn't until 2011 that Ms. Yen reaped the first rewards, achieving unexpectedly high profits—four times greater than her previous coffee plantation.

Following her initial success, Ms. Yen knew she had chosen the right path and continued to expand her orchard. This time, her family fully agreed to invest in planting another 5 hectares of oranges and tangerines.

Despite achieving considerable success, Ms. Yen still wanted her products to have even higher value. With that in mind, she researched methods to make her orchard bear fruit out of season.

After some research, Ms. Yen realized that oranges and tangerines only bloom when there is plenty of rain. This sparked an idea in her: to "force" her orchard to endure drought during the rainy season. Without hesitation, during the rainy season, Ms. Yen bought tarpaulins to cover the entire ground, preventing the trees from absorbing water. After the rainy season, she would pump a large amount of water to irrigate the trees. Surprisingly, with this simple technique, Ms. Yen managed to make her orchard bloom and bear fruit as she wished.

For the past three years, Ms. Yen has earned billions of dong annually from her orange and tangerine orchard. According to Ms. Yen, forcing the trees to bear fruit out of season does not affect productivity, but the economic efficiency is much higher. In 2017 alone, Ms. Yen expects to harvest over 100 tons of oranges and tangerines, bringing in approximately 4 billion dong.

Farmers in Nghe An successfully produce premium orange wine.

Using closed-loop technology from Japan, farmers in Con Cuong district have successfully processed clean orange products including orange peel jam, orange wine, orange wine, orange soap, orange essential oil, orange syrup, etc., which are considered premium, high-quality products. These products are sold directly at the factory and were showcased at the Nghe An Investor Meeting in February 2017.
