Reuters and THX, citing security sources, reported that on May 7, suicide bombers belonging to the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS) attacked the K1 military base of Kurdish forces northwest of Kirkuk in northern Iraq, where US military advisers are stationed.

The bombing killed two Kurdish security personnel and five suicide bombers. Six other Kurds were also injured in the attack.

An officer said, "These suicide bombers were wearing uniforms similar to those of the Kurdish forces and had shaved their beards like us."

An unnamed Kurdish security source said the attack occurred at 3:30 local time (3:00 GMT) when five ISIS suicide bombers wearing explosive vests infiltrated the K1 base, leading to a fierce clash between the attackers and Kurdish forces.

The attack occurred as Iraqi security forces, backed by the international coalition against ISIS, were conducting a major offensive to dislodge ISIS militants from their main stronghold in western Mosul, northern Iraq.
