Reuters and THX quoted security sources as saying that on May 7, many suicide bombers belonging to the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS) attacked the K1 military base of the Kurdish forces in the northwest of Kirkuk city in northern Iraq, where US military advisors are stationed.

The bombing killed two Kurdish security personnel and five suicide bombers. Six other Kurds were also injured in the attack.

"These suicide bombers were wearing Kurdish uniforms and had shaved their beards like us," an officer said.

The attack occurred at 3:30 a.m. local time (3 a.m. GMT) when five IS suicide bombers wearing explosive vests entered the K1 base, leading to fierce clashes between the attackers and Kurdish forces, an unnamed Kurdish security source said.

The attack comes as Iraqi security forces backed by the international anti-IS coalition are conducting a major offensive to dislodge IS elements from their main stronghold in western Mosul, northern Iraq.
