IS claims execution of 'Russian officer' in Syria

IS militants have posted a video online showing the beheading of a man they describe as a Russian intelligence officer captured in Syria.

SITE, organizationbased in the USA monitoring group that monitors the activities of radical Islamic militants said today that the Islamic State (IS) terrorist group has just posted a video showing the beheading of a man believed to be a Russian intelligence officer captured in Syria, according toReuters.

The 12-minute Russian-language video, released on the day Russia held a military parade to mark the 72nd anniversary of the victory over Nazi Germany, shows a mandressed in black kneeling in the desert and calling on other Russian intelligence officers to surrender.

An IS militant then used a knife to execute the man.The video also shows what IS militants describe as the aftermath of Russian airstrikes in Syria.

According to Reuters,The video has not been verified and it is still unclear the identity of the beheaded man and when the incident took place.The Russian Defense Ministry and Federal Security Service have not commented on the video.

The Russian army launched a military campaign in September 2015 to destroy IS and other terrorist groups in Syria, protecting the government of President Bashar al-Assad. The Russian Defense Ministry said that so far about 30 Russian soldiers have been killed in this campaign.
