Speaking to reporters, Foreign Minister Kishida said there was no confirmation that the missiles had reached Japan's exclusive economic zone. The Japanese foreign minister affirmed that Tokyo would coordinate with Washington and Seoul to gather information and analyze the launch.
Meanwhile, the head of South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff announced that North Korea had launched a series of objects that appeared to be land-to-ship cruise missiles from the vicinity of the eastern coastal city of Wonsan.
These missiles flew approximately 200 kilometers before falling into the Sea of Japan. This brings the total number of ballistic missiles launched by North Korea this year to nine.
Earlier, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and his counterparts at the G7 summit agreed that North Korea “poses a new and more serious threat to international peace and stability.” The leaders also “called on Pyongyang to completely and irreversibly end its ballistic missile and nuclear programs.”
