Raising rabbits yields a profit of nearly 300 million VND per year.
(Baonghean.vn) - Raising rabbits on a scale of over 1,000 animals, Ms. Duong Thi Hau in Hamlet 5, Thuan Son Commune, Do Luong District (Nghe An) has earned an income of 25-30 million VND per month.
After researching the area and finding that no family in Do Luong district was raising rabbits on a large scale, Ms. Duong Thi Hau (Hamlet 5, Thuan Son Commune) decided to invest in cages and breeding stock to develop her family's economy. Initially, she imported 200 New Zealand rabbit breeds from the Vietnam-France Animal Husbandry Institute. She also spent months learning rabbit farming techniques in Da Nang and Hai Duong.

Rabbits are clean animals and thrive in cool environments, so when building their enclosures, Ms. Hau designed them with an automatic drinking water system and an insulated roof. “When I first started, I didn't have a firm grasp of the techniques, so the first few batches of rabbits grew slowly, reproduced irregularly, and were prone to disease. After some time raising them, I learned from practical experience and also studied techniques online. By applying the correct procedures for disease prevention, feeding them at the right times, and ensuring they received sufficient nutrients, the production of marketable meat and breeding rabbits has improved significantly,” Ms. Hau shared.
Thanks to her perseverance, from an initial 200 breeding rabbits, Ms. Hau has now expanded her herd to over 1,000. Rabbits grow very quickly due to their short reproductive cycle; female rabbits are pregnant for only 30 days. Each female rabbit gives birth to 7 litters a year, with 6-8 offspring per litter. Newborn rabbits are nursed for the first 15 days, and then taught to eat feed pellets for the next 15 days. After that, they are fed milkweed, Bidens pilosa, sweet potato leaves, water spinach, or tea leaves...
After more than two months of raising, rabbits can be ready for market; currently, rabbits are easily sold on the market and are a safe food source, serving the consumption needs of the people.

Currently, the wholesale price of rabbits is 70,000 VND/kg, and the retail price ranges from 90,000 to 100,000 VND/kg; on average, each rabbit weighs 2.3 to 2.5 kg. Due to the demand from restaurants and many people, Ms. Hau's rabbit herd sells easily, providing a relatively high income. Currently, she has 700 breeding rabbits and 400 marketable rabbits in her farm; after deducting expenses, her family earns over 300 million VND per year.

According to Mr. Nguyen Van Hoi, Vice Chairman of Thuan Son Commune People's Committee, Ms. Hau's rabbit farming model is currently providing a higher and more stable income compared to other livestock. However, if many households raise rabbits, it will be difficult to ensure stable sales.
