(Baonghean.vn)- Raising rabbits with a herd of more than 1,000, Ms. Duong Thi Hau in Hamlet 5, Thuan Son Commune, Do Luong District (Nghe An) has an income of 25 - 30 million VND per month.

After researching in Do Luong district and finding that no family raised rabbits on a large scale, Ms. Duong Thi Hau (Hamlet 5, Thuan Son Commune) decided to invest in barns and breeding animals to develop her family's economy. Initially, she imported 200 New Zealand rabbits from the Vietnam-France Animal Husbandry Institute. She also spent months learning about rabbit raising experience in Da Nang and Hai Duong.

Rabbits are clean and suitable for cool air, so when building the barn, Ms. Hau designed an automatic drinking water system and an insulated roof. "When I first started working, due to not having a good grasp of the techniques, the first batches of rabbits grew slowly, reproduced unevenly and were prone to diseases. After a period of raising them, I learned from practical experience and learned techniques through the internet. When applying the correct disease vaccination procedures, feeding them on time, and providing adequate nutrition, the commercial meat yield as well as the breeding rabbits grew quite well," Ms. Hau shared.

Thanks to her perseverance, from 200 breeding rabbits, Ms. Hau has now multiplied her herd to more than 1,000 rabbits. Rabbits grow very quickly thanks to their short reproductive cycle, with female rabbits only being pregnant for 30 days. Each female rabbit gives birth to 7 litters a year, each litter containing 6-8 rabbits. Newborn rabbits are breastfed for the first 15 days, and learn to eat bran for the next 15 days. They are then fed milkweed, cogon grass, sweet potato leaves, water spinach or tea leaves...

After more than 2 months of raising rabbits, they can be sold; currently, rabbits are easily consumed in the market and are a safe food source, serving the consumption needs of people.

Currently, the wholesale price of rabbits is 70,000 VND/kg, retail price is from 90,000 - 100,000 VND/kg; on average, each rabbit sold weighs 2.3 to 2.5 kg. Due to the demand of restaurants and many people, Ms. Hau's rabbits are easy to sell, providing a relatively high income. Currently, in her cage, there are 700 breeding rabbits and 400 commercial rabbits for sale; after deducting expenses, each year her family earns more than 300 million VND.

Rabbits' main food sources are milkweed, cogon grass, sweet potato leaves, water spinach or tea leaves.

According to Mr. Nguyen Van Hoi - Vice Chairman of Thuan Son Commune People's Committee, the rabbit farming model of Ms. Hau's family is providing higher and more stable income compared to other livestock at this time. However, if many households raise rabbits together, the consumption capacity will also be very difficult to stabilize.
