"We don't want to create undue stress for the public, but we also can't wait to start an information campaign to ensure people know how to respond if this possibility occurs," Hawaii News Now quoted a statement from Mr. Vern Miyagi, head of the Hawaii State Emergency Management Agency, USA, on July 20.
Mr. Miyagi said a plan to respond to the risk of a ballistic missile attack by North Korea will be announced tomorrow.
The response plan includes evacuation measures and the slogan "get inside, stay inside and be prepared," the Honolulu Star Advertiser quoted Hawaii officials as saying.
The campaign also includes testing sirens on the first working day of every month. The first sound is for alarm, the second sound will sound if there is an attack.
After North Korea successfully tested the Hwasong-14 ballistic missile, US intelligence officials believe Pyongyang has the ability to launch missiles as far as 6,400 km. Many military experts fear that North Korea's intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) could strike Hawaii and Alaska.
If hit by a North Korean ballistic missile, about 1.4 million people in Hawaii would be affected. Hawaii is also home to many important US military facilities, including the Pentagon's Pacific Command.
