"We do not want to create undue stress for the public, but we cannot wait to begin an information campaign to ensure that people know how to respond if this possibility occurs," Hawaii News Now quoted a statement from Mr. Vern Miyagi, in charge of the Hawaii State Emergency Management Agency, USA, on July 20.

Mr. Miyagi said the plan to respond to the risk of a ballistic missile attack by North Korea will be announced tomorrow.

The response plan includes evacuation measures and the slogan "get in, stay home and be prepared," the Honolulu Star Advertiser quoted Hawaii officials as saying.

The campaign also includes testing the sirens on the first working day of every month. The first sound is an alarm, the second sound will sound if there is an attack.

After North Korea successfully tested the Hwasong-14 ballistic missile, US intelligence officials believe Pyongyang has the ability to launch missiles as far as 6,400 km. Many military experts fear that North Korea's intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) could strike Hawaii and Alaska.

If a North Korean ballistic missile were to strike Hawaii, about 1.4 million people would be affected. Hawaii is also home to several important US military facilities, including the Pentagon's Pacific Command.
