An Indian woman was brutally beaten by her brother-in-law and his friend over giving birth to a daughter and a dowry dispute.

The incident happened on July 14 in Patiala, Punjab, India.

Meena Kashyap, 35, was brutally beaten with a hockey stick by her brother-in-law and his friend after her husband's family discovered that she had reported to the authorities the repeated abuse she suffered for giving birth to a daughter.

Meena had previously given birth to a baby girl, but her husband's family did not accept her and refused to take her in. Not only that, the dispute over the 700,000 rupee dowry (more than 10,000 USD) caused frequent conflicts between her and her husband's family.

In India, parents are expected to provide a dowry for their daughters before they marry. However, many in-laws even demand additional dowry after the wedding, especially after the bride gives birth.

According to Daily Mail, in India there are cases of women being beaten, even killed if they refuse to hand over their dowry to their husband's family.
