An Indian woman was brutally beaten by her brother-in-law and his friend for giving birth to a daughter and for a dispute over dowry.

The incident occurred on July 14th in Patiala, Punjab, India.

Meena Kashyap, 35, was brutally beaten with hockey sticks by her brother-in-law and a friend after her husband's family reported to the authorities that she had been repeatedly abused for giving birth to a daughter.

Previously, Meena gave birth to a baby girl, but her husband's family did not accept her and refused to acknowledge her as their child. Furthermore, disputes over the 700,000 rupee (over $10,000 USD) dowry caused frequent conflicts between her and her husband's family.

In India, parents are required to prepare a dowry for their daughters before they move to their husband's home. However, many families of the bride's husband even demand an additional sum after the wedding, especially after the bride gives birth.

According to the Daily Mail, in India there are cases where women are beaten or even killed if they refuse to hand over their dowry to their husband's family.
