Wimbledon: Federer, the records and greatness of the Swiss tennis player.
(Baonghean.vn) - With a 3-0 victory over Marin Cilic, Roger Federer set a record of winning this prestigious tournament 8 times.Federer officially set a record as the oldest player (35 years old) to win Wimbledon in the Open Era.
Entering the Wimbledon final, despite Marin Cilic's excellent form, not many believed the Croatian player could pull off an upset against Federer. Simply put, in 2017, Federer was displaying outstanding performance on the court; in fact, he was having one of the best seasons of his career. This was also Federer's 11th appearance in the Wimbledon final.

Prior to the final, Cilic had only beaten Federer once in seven previous encounters. That was in the 2015 US Open semi-final, the tournament where the Croatian player won his first and only Grand Slam title to date. In their most recent meeting in the Wimbledon quarter-finals, Cilic also gave Federer considerable difficulty.
In fact, Cilic came very close to winning, creating three match points in the tie-break of the fourth set, but ultimately Federer came back to win 3-2.

At the start of the final, Cilic proactively capitalized on his powerful serves. Furthermore, Cilic frequently pressured Federer's left side, creating numerous difficulties for him. As a result, the final was very exciting and evenly matched.
But Cilic couldn't maintain his momentum for long. The match only really got interesting in the first few games when Cilic unexpectedly broke serve in game 3 but failed to capitalize. In the fourth game, things started to go downhill for Cilic after a slip while hitting the ball.
The turning point came in the fifth game, when Cilic and Federer exchanged rallies at the net. Federer demonstrated his class by successfully breaking Cilic's serve. Cilic collapsed from there and lost the first set 3-6. A fateful slip resulted in Cilic sustaining an injury.
The Croatian player endured the pain to return to the court, but the experienced Federer knew how to quickly finish the set with a 6-1 victory. In the latter half of the second set, Cilic even broke down in tears, and the umpire stopped the match so that a doctor could attend to his injured foot.
The exciting final match resumed in the third set when Cilic, with nothing left to lose, gave it his all. However, Cilic's commendable effort was not enough to pull off an upset against a Federer full of composure, enthusiasm, and top-level experience, ultimately resulting in a 4-6 defeat.
Against an opponent who was no longer at his peak, Federer easily controlled the match with precise shots across the grass court. Winning 3-0, Federer officially claimed his eighth Wimbledon title.
Records
In just 101 minutes of play, with 23 winners and only 8 unforced errors, Federer defeated Cilic 6-3, 6-1, and 6-4, surpassing Pete Sampras to become the player with the most Wimbledon titles, with 8 wins.

This is the 19th Grand Slam title of the Swiss tennis player's career. Thus, Federer holds the record for the most Grand Slam titles with 19 championships (8 Wimbledon, 5 Australian Open, 1 French Open, 5 US Open). He is followed by his rival Rafa Nadal with 15 Grand Slam titles.
Since the beginning of 2017, this is Federer's fifth title after winning the Australian Open, Indian Wells, Miami, and Halle, including two Grand Slams. Federer is currently the King of Wimbledon, holding the record for the most Wimbledon titles with 8 wins, one more than Pete Sampras.
Remarkably, Federer didn't lose a single set when he won Wimbledon in 2017. In Wimbledon history, only one other player has achieved this feat: Bjorn Borg in 1976.
Besides the trophy and £2.2 million prize money, FedEx will also return to the top 3 in the world rankings when the ATP rankings are announced. Congratulations to the 2017 Wimbledon champion!
