(Baonghean.vn) - With a 3-0 victory over Marin Cilic, Roger Federer set a record of 8 times winning this prestigious tournament.Federer officially set a record as the oldest tennis player (35 years old) to win Wimbledon in the Open Era.

Entering the Wimbledon final, although Marin Cilic was playing very well, not many people believed that the Croatian could make a difference against Federer. Simply put, in 2017, Federer was showing excellent form on the court, in fact, this tennis player was living one of the best seasons of his career. This was also the 11th time Federer reached the Wimbledon final.

The KingWimbledon

Before the final, Cilic had only beaten Federer once in seven meetings. That was in the 2015 US Open semi-final, the tournament where the Croatian won his first and only Grand Slam title to date. In their most recent meeting in the Wimbledon quarter-finals, Cilic also caused Federer a lot of trouble.

In fact, Cilic was very close to winning when he created 3 match points in the tie-break of set 4 but in the end Federer still came back to win 3-2 overall.

At the beginning of the final, Cilic actively took advantage of his strong serves. Not to mention, Cilic often forced the left to cause many difficulties for Federer. Therefore, the final was very attractive and balanced.

But Cilic could not maintain his excitement for too long. The match only really became interesting in the first few games when Cilic unexpectedly broke in game 3 but could not take advantage. In game 4, things started to get worse for Cilic after slipping in a shot situation.

The turning point came in the 5th game, Cilic and Federer played a double at the net, Federer proved his class to break successfully. Cilic collapsed from there and lost 3-6 in the first set. The fateful slip caused Cilic to get injured.

The Croatian player fought back the pain and returned to the court, but the experienced Federer knew how to quickly end this set with a score of 6-1. In the second half of the second set, Cilic even burst into tears, the referee stopped the match and asked the doctor to take care of the pain in his foot.

The final match was worth watching again in the third set when Cilic, with nothing to lose, gave it his all. However, Cilic's remarkable effort was not enough to create a surprise against a Federer full of courage, enthusiasm and experience at the top level and he eventually had to accept defeat 4-6.

Against an opponent who was no longer in good shape, Federer easily dominated the match with precise ball movements all over the grass court. Winning 3-0, Federer officially won Wimbledon for the 8th time.

Records

It took Federer only 101 minutes of play with 23 winners and only 8 unforced errors to defeat Cilic 6-3, 6-1 and 6-4, thereby surpassing Pete Sampras to become the tennis player with the most Wimbledon championships with 8 titles.

This is the 19th Grand Slam in the Swiss tennis player's career. Thus, Federer holds the record for the number of Grand Slam titles with 19 championships (8 Wimbledon, 5 Australian Open, 1 French Open, 5 US Open). Behind him is his rival Rafa Nadal with 15 Grand Slams.

Since the beginning of 2017, this is Federer's fifth title after the Australian Open, Indian Wells, Miami and Halle championships, including two Grand Slams. Federer is the King of Wimbledon, holding the record of 8 championships in this tournament, 1 more than Pete Sampras.

It is also noteworthy that Federer did not lose a set when he won Wimbledon 2017. In the history of Wimbledon, only one person has done the same thing as Federer, Bjorn Borg in 1976.

As well as the trophy and £2.2m, FedEx will also return to the world's top 3 when the ATP rankings are announced. Congratulations to the 2017 Wimbledon champion!
