According to CNN, researchers believe the June 27 attack used a vulnerability in the Windows operating system called EternalBlue to attack corporate networks. The WannaCry malware exploited the EternalBlue vulnerability and is known to be one of the cyberattack tools belonging to the NSA.

Previously, WikiLeaks provided data on EternalBlue and other cyberattack programs, claiming that these programs were developed by the NSA and used by US special agencies.

On June 27, a major cyberattack using the Petya malware targeted energy, telecommunications, and financial companies in Russia and Ukraine, and subsequently spread worldwide. In May 2017, more than 150 countries were attacked by the WannaCry malware.
