Top 10 safest SUVs in the US in 2017

In the list, Japanese car manufacturers dominate, with South Korea having only one representative.

The top 10 compiled by MSNAuto are based on ratings from two US automotive safety testing organizations: the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

Mitsubishi Outlander

In the latest safety tests, the front-wheel-drive Outlander received a 4 out of 5 star rating from the NHTSA, while the all-wheel-drive version achieved the maximum score.

Toyota RAV4

The RAV4 is gradually overtaking its sibling, the Camry, to become Toyota's best-selling model in the US. The RAV4 consistently achieves top marks in crash tests, with the Platinum version receiving a high rating from the IIHS.

Lexus NX

The NX features a sharp, sporty design. In its latest version, the Lexus crossover focuses on improving noise levels and adding safety features. The NX has received a 5-star rating from the NHTSA since 2015.

Mazda CX-3

In terms of price, the CX-3 is the cheapest crossover compared to the others on this list. The CX-3 scores points for safety features in the Grand Touring version with the i-Activsense package. The only drawback of the CX-3 is the cramped rear seats and small cargo space.

Toyota Highlander

Priced at nearly $32,000, the Highlander LE comes equipped with almost all standard safety features. In addition to ABS, EBD, BA, VSC, and TRAC, Toyota adds a lane departure warning system, automatic high beams, and adaptive cruise control.

Hyundai Santa Fe

The 2017 Santa Fe features upgraded safety features such as intelligent cruise control, lane departure warning, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, and a rearview camera. The 2017 Santa Fe is available with two engine options.

Subaru Forester

Subaru is a brand that prioritizes driving feel, and in addition, the company equips its vehicles with a host of safety technologies, such as the EyeSight package which includes forward collision warning and LED headlights.

Lexus RX

The RX is a fairly successful model for Lexus. It boasts a luxurious design, numerous driver-assistance features, and a spacious interior. In the new version, Toyota's luxury brand adds LED headlights and an optional all-wheel drive system.

Volvo XC60

Safety is a top priority for Volvo as it transforms into a luxury car brand to compete with its rivals. The new generation XC60 is equipped with intelligent driver assistance systems that detect and mitigate the severity of frontal collisions or lane changes, and a blind spot detection and warning system works similarly.

The new XC60 offers the optional Pilot Assist semi-autonomous driving system, which automatically controls steering, braking, and acceleration even when the vehicle is operating at speeds up to 130 km/h.

Honda Pilot

The 2017 Pilot's safety technology includes ABS, EBD, BA, hill-start assist, vehicle stability control, and traction control. In addition, it features blind-spot monitoring, lane departure warning, lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, rear collision warning, and traffic alert.
