10 safest SUVs of 2017 in the US

In the list, Japanese car companies make up the majority, with Korea having the only representative.

The Top 10 was compiled by MSNAuto based on ratings from two auto safety testing organizations in the US, including the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

Mitsubishi Outlander

In the latest safety tests, the front-wheel-drive Outlander received four out of five stars from NHTSA, while the four-wheel-drive version achieved the maximum score.

Toyota RAV4

The RAV4 is slowly surpassing its sibling, the Camry, to become Toyota's best-selling vehicle in the US. The RAV4 has achieved top scores in crash tests, with the Platinum version receiving high marks from the IIHS.

Lexus NX

The NX has a sporty, angular design. In the new version, the Lexus crossover focuses on improving noise and adding safety features. The NX has achieved a 5-star score from NHTSA since 2015.

Mazda CX-3

In terms of price, the CX-3 is the cheapest crossover compared to the rest of the models on this list. The CX-3 scores points for safety features in the Grand Touring version with the i-Activsense package. The only downsides of the CX-3 are the cramped rear seats and small luggage compartment.

Toyota Highlander

Priced at nearly $32,000, the Highlander LE comes with almost all standard safety features. In addition to ABS, EBD, BA, VSC, TRAC, Toyota adds lane departure warning system, automatic headlights and adaptive cruise control.

Hyundai Santa Fe
