On July 4th, North Korea announced the successful testing of an ICBM, claiming the weapon could carry a large and heavy nuclear warhead.
Some experts believe the missile has a range that can reach Alaska and Hawaii, and the launch demonstrates a significant advance by Pyongyang in its ambition to develop a nuclear weapon capable of striking the United States.
Two B-1B bombers conducted live-fire exercises at a firing range in Gangwon Province, eastern South Korea. The target was a simulated missile launcher. The US and South Korean aircraft also performed precision strike drills targeting simulated enemy targets located deep underground.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the two American bombers then flew westward, close to the border of the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) separating the two countries, before leaving South Korean airspace.
Immediately after North Korea's missile test, the US-South Korean alliance also conducted a large-scale artillery and missile exercise.
Despite military maneuvers aimed at intimidating the Kim Jong Un regime, Seoul and Washington remain committed to resolving the nuclear crisis on the Korean Peninsula peacefully. Concluding his second European tour, President Trump and his Asian allies sought consensus on how to address the North Korean "threat."
On July 7, the United States, South Korea, and Japan agreed to push for a United Nations Security Council resolution that would impose new sanctions on North Korea.
