Two US supersonic fighter jets conducted live-fire drills in South Korea today (July 9) to demonstrate their strength after North Korea launched an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM).

The South Korean Air Force confirmed that two B-1B Lancer strategic bombers took off from a base in Guam to join US and South Korean fighter jets in an exercise to destroy enemy ballistic missile launchers and underground nuclear bunker facilities.

On July 4, North Korea announced the successful test of an ICBM, asserting that the weapon could carry a large and heavy nuclear warhead.

Some experts believe the missile has the range to reach Alaska and Hawaii, and the launch represents significant progress by Pyongyang in its ambition to build a nuclear weapon that can strike the US mainland.

Two B-1B bombers conducted live-fire drills at a firing range in Gangwon Province, eastern South Korea. The target was a simulated missile launcher. The US and South Korean aircraft also conducted precision strike exercises against simulated enemy targets deep underground.

Yonhap news agency reported that the two US super bombers then flew west, close to the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) border separating the two countries, and then left South Korean airspace.

Immediately after North Korea tested its missile, the US-South Korean alliance also conducted a massive artillery and missile exercise.

Despite the military moves to "show off" the Kim Jong Un regime, Seoul and Washington pledged to resolve the nuclear crisis on the Korean Peninsula peacefully. Closing his second trip to Europe, President Trump and his Asian allies sought consensus on how to deal with the "threat" of North Korea.

On July 7, the US, South Korea and Japan agreed to push for a UN Security Council resolution that would impose new sanctions on North Korea./.
