Two brothers, aged 5 and 2, living in Putnam County, West Virginia, USA, were lucky to escape serious injuries after the car they were driving crashed, CNN reported on July 20.
Wanting to visit their grandparents' farm about 11 km away, the two boys decided to climb into their mother's 2005 Ford Focus, take the spare key from under the mat and start the engine. Learning how to drive from adults and with their "experience" playing video games, the two boys divided the driving tasks, the older one was in charge of the gas pedal and brake pedal, while the younger one held the steering wheel.
After traveling about halfway to their grandparents' house, passing the intersection and successfully making a right turn, the two boys lost control of the car and drove into a ditch, Putnam County Sheriff Steve Deweese said.
People living nearby who witnessed the accident called the police. The two boys were immediately taken to the hospital for examination. Police are investigating how the two boys were able to travel such a long distance without any passersby noticing.
It was the older brother who led the police back to the house. Sheriff Deweese said the mother was surprised because she thought the two children were playing together in the yard.
"I'm glad they weren't seriously injured and I hope the mother will take better care of her children," Mr. Deweese said, adding that police are working with child protection agencies to clarify why the mother was unaware that her two young children were driving out on the road.
