Two brothers, aged 5 and 2, living in Putnam County, West Virginia, were fortunate not to be seriously injured after the car they were driving crashed, CNN reported on July 20.

Wanting to visit their grandparents' farm about 11 km from their house, the two boys decided to climb into their mother's 2005 Ford Focus, grab the spare key hidden under the floor mat, and start the engine. Having learned to drive from adults and drawing on their "experience" from playing video games, the two boys divided up the driving tasks: the older one took charge of the gas and brake pedals, while the younger one held the steering wheel.

After traveling nearly halfway to their grandparents' house, crossing an intersection and successfully making a right turn, the two boys lost control of their bike and crashed into a ditch, Putnam County Sheriff Steve Deweese said.

Residents living nearby witnessed the accident and called the police. The two boys were immediately taken to the hospital for examination. Police are investigating how the two boys were able to travel such a long distance without anyone noticing.

It was the older brother who led the police back home. Police Chief Deweese said the mother was surprised because she was convinced the two children were playing together in the yard.

"I'm glad they weren't seriously injured and I hope the mother will be more careful in supervising her children," Deweese said, adding that police are working with child protection agencies to determine why the mother was unaware that her two young children were driving on the road.
