Mooncakes with fresh durian filling cost millions
Each box of mooncakes contains fresh durian from Malaysia's premium growing region and is being hand-carried to Vietnam for sale at 1.2 million VND.
In early August, Ms. Thuy Linh (Hanoi) began importing mooncakes with fresh durian filling from Malaysia to test the market. According to her, mooncakes with durian filling have been sold in Vietnam for a long time, but this premium type is the first time it has been brought back.
Each box of cakes currently costs 1.2 million VND, including 8 quite small cakes, only about 60 grams each. The cake has a soft, smooth crust, slightly yellow in color, the seller said it is made from glutinous rice flour mixed with sugar and grapefruit flower water. The filling inside is fresh, unadulterated durian from the Musang King region, where the best quality durian is grown in Malaysia.
“I import 40-50 boxes each time. Because it is still the beginning of the Mid-Autumn Festival, the products are only sold sporadically. However, customers are very interested. Those who have already bought them are all satisfied,” said Ms. Linh.

Also importing and selling this type of cake, Ms. An Thuong (Hanoi) said that the price is high and she does not sell it wholesale because each time she imports a small amount, the quantity is limited. Meanwhile, she guarantees that this is a quality product, belonging to the high-end segment of a famous brand in Malaysia. The main customers are families with good income or for gifts because she sells the whole box, not each piece individually.
“The cake has a very unique aroma. Even those who don’t like durian will accept it because the smell is not as strong as other types of durian or durian cakes. To eat it best, you need to store it in the freezer. When you want to eat it, take it out and leave it out for a few minutes, the cake will be soft, rich, and much more delicious than durian ice cream,” Ms. Thuong instructed.
As for mooncakes with durian filling, the hand-carried market also has many different prices and origins. The most popular are still from Hong Kong and Malaysia. For example, the white soft-shelled cake with fresh durian filling is currently priced at over a hundred thousand dong per piece.
In addition to mooncakes with fresh durian filling from Musang King, which are considered new to the Vietnamese market, the market for hand-carried mooncakes has begun to become bustling with familiar products imported from Malaysia, Hong Kong, Thailand, Korea, Japan, etc.
Some online dealers predict that, in addition to the new type of cake that is currently testing the reaction, the Larva mooncake line with flowing egg filling will continue to be popular like last year. However, some sources also warn that this type of cake has a high risk of being counterfeited, so buyers need to be careful.
Or like in recent days, the large pizza-sized mooncakes with premium ingredients but surprisingly cheap prices are quite popular. The cakes are advertised as being imported directly from Hong Kong but also make some customers question the origin and real quality.
