Audi plans to produce a hybrid sports car.

The CEO of Audi Sport stated that in the future they will launch hybrid-powered supercars, particularly an electric version of the Audi R8.

Since Audi Sport was born from the ashes of Quattro GmbH in late 2016, the unit has launched eight models in 18 months. In the coming years, they will introduce Audi crossover and hybrid versions.

Although the Audi Sport logo appears on many models, CEO Stephan Winkelmann still wanted to see a new car that truly embodied the brand's "glory."

Winkelmann acknowledged interest in producing a lower-displacement R8 hybrid version. He stated, "I'm very interested in this in the future. I think not only does the brand deserve it, but there's also market demand, customers are waiting for it."

If Audi's plan to produce a hybrid-powered supercar is successful, they will borrow some components from Volkswagen but still maintain their own identity. The new hybrid model is not only a step forward for Audi Sport but also for the entire Audi brand. Winkelmann said his immediate goal is to expand the rest of the Audi Sport product line.

Currently, Audi Sport is responsible for producing a range of models including the R8, RS3, RS7, and TT RS, as well as Formula E, GT3, and GT4 racing cars.

While the only RS crossover is the RS Q3, Audi Sport will expand its crossover lineup with an RS Q5 expected to launch later this year and an RS Q8 possibly appearing by the end of the decade. New versions will also include electric powertrains.

Winkelmann also stated that in 2020 and 2021, Audi Sport will offer an Audi E-tron version in the form of a sedan coupe.
