Audi plans to produce hybrid sports car

Audi Sport CEO said that in the future, it will launch super sports cars using hybrid engines, especially the Audi R8 version using an electric engine.

Since Audi Sport was born from the ashes of Quattro GmbH in late 2016, the unit has launched eight models in 18 months, with Audi crossovers and hybrids to follow in the coming years.

Although the Audi Sport logo appears on many models, CEO Stephan Winkelmann still wants to see a new car that carries the brand's "halo."

Winkelmann has admitted interest in producing a low-displacement hybrid version of the R8. “I am very interested in this in the future,” he said. “I think not only that the brand deserves it, but also that there is a market demand, customers are waiting.”

If Audi’s plans for a hybrid supercar come to fruition, it will borrow some components from Volkswagen but maintain its own identity. The new hybrid is a step forward not just for Audi Sport, but for the Audi brand as a whole. Winkelmann said his immediate goal is to expand the rest of the Audi Sport lineup.

Audi Sport is currently responsible for a range of models including the R8, RS3, RS7 and TT RS, as well as Formula E, GT3 and GT4 racing cars.

The only RS crossover is the RS Q3, Audi Sport will expand the crossover line with an RS Q5 due later this year and an RS Q8 that could appear by the end of the decade. The new version will include an electric motor.

Winkelmann also said that in 2020 and 2021, Audi Sport will offer a version of the Audi E-tron as a coupe sedan.
