100 British prisoners escape thanks to Hurricane Irma
More than 100 British prisoners have been captured after escaping from a prison in the British Virgin Islands following the devastation caused by Hurricane Irma.
British newspaper Metro reported that the Governor of the islands, Mr. Gus Jaspert, said that British prisoners from Balsam Ghut prison were arrested on September 14.
“The Government of the British Virgin Islands is grateful to the police and military for their tireless efforts, which resulted in a completely successful operation,” Mr. Jaspert said.
"This is a huge step forward in the effort to rebuild this great territory."
Earlier, Virgin Islanders said they were “terrified” of prisoners who escaped because of damage caused by Hurricane Irma.
They said the looting was “horrific” and prisoners had committed rape.

"You go into town, you see them breaking into stores, opening everything and stealing everything," said Shanelle Williams, who took in 15 other people in her home after the storm hit.
"Since the army arrived, things have calmed down, the only problem left is the prisoners who are still on the run.
"They raped someone and tried to steal from someone else, it's scary."
Another woman also said she "didn't feel safe" after the storm.
British Foreign Secretary Alan Duncan said on Tuesday that the prisoners posed a “complete threat to law and order”.
