Damrey is a historic storm in Nha Trang, 20 people died

Storm No. 12 is the biggest storm to hit Nha Trang City. At least 20 people have died and 17 are missing due to the storm.

Data updated at 5:00 p.m. this afternoon from the Standing Office of the Central Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control said that storm No. 12 (storm Damrey) has caused huge losses in human lives and property in the South Central provinces.

Specifically, 20 people died (18 people in the provinces and 2 people due to the transport ship accident). Of which, Khanh Hoa had 12, Binh Dinh 5, Lam Dong 3.

531 houses collapsed, nearly 24,000 houses had their roofs blown off, and more than 40 ships sank.

Historic storms, floods can also be historic

Speaking with VietNamNet, Mr. Le Thanh Hai, Deputy General Director of the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, said that storm No. 12 that made landfall in the South Central region this morning is a strong storm.

Damrey is the biggest storm ever to hit Nha Trang City, Khanh Hoa.

“Our colleagues at the South Central Hydrometeorological Station assessed that this is the strongest storm to hit Nha Trang ever, surpassing the historic storms of 1988, 1993, and 2009. At the meteorological station on Tran Phu Street near the sea, the wind gusts were measured at level 13,” Mr. Hai informed.

However, he said that at places without measuring points such as Van Phong Bay and Ca Pass, the wind level could be even stronger.

In Phu Yen, statistics show that the storm is equivalent to the 1993 storm Lola.

Mr. Hai noted that tonight, cold air will strengthen, so the rain situation in the Central and South Central regions in the next few days will be extremely serious, at least until November 7.

“Flood water is now mostly at alert level 3, we are closely monitoring, tonight and tomorrow morning it could reach historic levels. We cannot rule out the possibility that Thua Thien Hue, Quang Nam, Quang Ngai, and Binh Dinh will repeat the historic floods of 1999,” Mr. Hai emphasized.
