Typhoon No. 12 was the strongest typhoon to hit Nha Trang City. At least 20 people died and 17 are missing due to the storm.

According to updated figures from the Standing Office of the Central Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control at 5 PM this afternoon, Typhoon No. 12 (Typhoon Damrey) has caused very large losses of life and property in the South Central provinces.

Specifically, 20 people died (18 in the provinces and 2 due to the cargo ship accident). Of these, 12 were in Khanh Hoa, 5 in Binh Dinh, and 3 in Lam Dong.

17 people are missing (6 in the provinces and 11 due to the cargo ship accident).

531 houses collapsed, nearly 24,000 houses had their roofs blown off, and more than 40 ships sank.

Historical storms and floods can also be historic.

Speaking to VietNamNet, Mr. Le Thanh Hai, Deputy Director General of the National Center for Hydrometeorology, said that Typhoon No. 12, which made landfall in the South Central region this morning, is a strong typhoon.

Damrey là cơn bão lớn nhất từ trước đến nay đổ bộ vào TP Nha Trang, Khánh Hoà
Damrey was the strongest typhoon ever to hit Nha Trang City, Khanh Hoa Province.

"Our colleagues at the South Central Meteorological and Hydrological Station assess this as the strongest storm to ever hit Nha Trang, surpassing the historical storms of 1988, 1993, and 2009. At the meteorological station on Tran Phu Street near the sea, wind gusts reached level 13," Mr. Hai informed.

However, he noted that in areas without measuring points, such as Van Phong Bay and Ca Pass, the wind speed could be even stronger.

In Phu Yen, statistics show that the storm was comparable to Typhoon Lola in 1993.

Mr. Hai noted that a cold front will intensify tonight, therefore the rainfall situation in Central and South Central Vietnam in the next few days will be extremely serious, at least until November 7th.

"Currently, floodwaters are mostly above alert level 3. We are monitoring the situation closely, and tonight and tomorrow morning they could reach historical levels. We cannot rule out the possibility that Thua Thien Hue, Quang Nam, Quang Ngai, and Binh Dinh will repeat the historical floods of 1999," Mr. Hai emphasized.
