The spoken and written languages of ethnic minorities in Con Cuong are fading away.
(Baonghean.vn) - In discussions with the survey team from the Ethnic Affairs Committee of the Provincial People's Council, the leaders of Con Cuong District People's Committee expressed concern about the gradual decline of the spoken and written languages of ethnic minorities.
On the afternoon of November 17th, a survey team from the Ethnic Affairs Committee of the Provincial People's Council, led by its head, Lo Thi Kim Ngan, held a working session with Con Cuong district regarding the implementation of several policies for the preservation and development of the culture of ethnic minorities in the area from 2011 to the present.

This thematic survey aims to understand and hear feedback on issues related to the implementation of Party and State policies, as well as provincial policies, regarding the preservation and development of the culture of ethnic minorities, in preparation for the upcoming Provincial People's Council meeting scheduled for mid-December.
| Con Cuong is a mountainous border district with a population of 70,335 people, comprising many ethnic groups living together, including: Thai (70.3%), Kinh (24.5%), Nung (0.25%), Hoa (0.14%), Kho Mu (0.05%) and Dan Lai (4.7%), each with its own distinct cultural identity. |

Speaking at the meeting, Ms. Kha Thi Tim, Vice Chairman of the District People's Committee, said that the preservation and development of the culture of ethnic minorities in Con Cuong district has been seriously implemented, achieving some concrete results in housing, community centers, traditional crafts, cuisine, etc.
Ms. Tim also added that the traditional Thai ethnic costume is well preserved, and currently all Thai villages still weave brocade to serve their families as well as sell to customers.
"Most schools in the district encourage students to wear traditional ethnic costumes during the weekly flag-raising ceremony, creating a habit and fostering national pride in them from a young age," the Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Con Cuong district stated.

However, she also expressed concern about the fact that the spoken and written languages of ethnic minorities are at risk of disappearing: "Nowadays, when you go down to the villages, you sometimes can't tell who is Kinh and who is from an ethnic minority anymore, because children speak the common language from a young age. Therefore, the district is paying close attention to the preservation of spoken and written languages; we are planning to introduce the Thai language into the curriculum of schools."
From 2011 to the present, Con Cuong has also faced limitations such as inconsistent efforts in preserving and developing the culture of ethnic minorities; overlapping responsibilities among departments of the District People's Committee; and the failure to collect, preserve, and maintain artifacts characteristic of the Thai ethnic group due to the lack of a traditional house for display, etc.
On behalf of the survey team, Ms. Lo Thi Kim Ngan requested Con Cuong to continue reviewing the implementation of policies already issued regarding the preservation and development of the culture of ethnic minorities in the district; to supplement solutions to improve this work; and to clearly define the responsibilities of all levels, sectors, and the local community...
In addition, the district needs to pay more attention to promoting good traditions and eliminating outdated customs: "The unique features in cuisine, clothing, language, writing, and folk knowledge need to be preserved, while at the same time, a unified guiding principle is needed to resolutely eliminate backward elements and outdated customs that hinder the current development process, in accordance with the views and policies of our Party and State."
The Head of the Ethnic Affairs Committee of the Provincial People's Council also noted that localities should focus on preserving historical and cultural relics, and mobilize social resources where possible to preserve the cultural values of ethnic minorities for future generations.
