(Baonghean.vn) - Talking with the survey team of the Provincial People's Council's Ethnic Minority Committee, the leader of the Con Cuong District People's Committee was concerned about the situation where the language and writing of ethnic minorities are gradually fading away.

The thematic survey aims to learn and listen to feedback on issues related to the implementation of policies of the Party, State and the province in recent times on preserving and developing the culture of ethnic minorities, serving the meeting of the Provincial People's Council scheduled to take place in mid-December.
Con Cuong is a mountainous border district with a population of 70,335 people and many ethnic groups living together, including: Thai (70.3%), Kinh (24.5%), Nung (0.25%), Hoa (0.14%), Kho Mu (0.05%) and Dan Lai (4.7%), each ethnic group has its own cultural identity. |

Speaking at the meeting, Ms. Kha Thi Tim - Vice Chairman of the District People's Committee said that the preservation and development of ethnic minority culture has been seriously implemented by Con Cuong district, achieving some specific results in housing, community houses, traditional crafts, cuisine, etc.
Ms. Tim also informed that Thai ethnic costumes are well preserved, and currently all Thai villages still weave brocade to serve their families as well as sell to customers.
“Most schools in the district encourage students to wear traditional national costumes during the flag-raising ceremony at the beginning of the week, creating habits and national pride for children from a young age,” said the Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Con Cuong district.

However, she is also concerned about the fact that the languages and scripts of ethnic minorities are at risk of being lost: “Nowadays, when going to the village, we sometimes don’t know who is Kinh and who is an ethnic minority anymore, because children all speak the common language from a young age. Therefore, the district is paying great attention to preserving the language and script; we are planning to introduce Thai language into teaching in schools.”
During the period from 2011 to present, Con Cuong has also encountered limitations such as the work of preserving and developing the culture of ethnic minorities is not regular; there is overlap between the departments of the District People's Committee; the collection, preservation and conservation of artifacts with characteristics of the Thai ethnic group has not been carried out because there is no traditional house for display,...
On behalf of the survey team, Ms. Lo Thi Kim Ngan requested Con Cuong to continue reviewing the implementation of issued policies on the preservation and development of ethnic minority culture in the district; supplementing solutions to do better in this work; clearly defining the responsibilities of all levels, sectors and communities...
In addition, the district needs to pay more attention to promoting good traditions and eliminating bad customs: "The unique features in cuisine, costumes, language, writing, and folk knowledge need to be preserved, while at the same time unifying the guiding viewpoint to resolutely eliminate backward factors and bad customs that hinder the current development process, in accordance with the viewpoints and guidelines of our Party and State".
The Head of the Ethnic Minorities Committee of the Provincial People's Council also noted that the locality should focus on preserving historical and cultural relics, mobilizing social resources in possible cases to preserve the cultural values of ethnic minorities for future generations.
