Singer Erik: 'I used to be just like Chi Pu'

Following the public backlash against Chi Pu's singing career, Erik, the singer of "Ghen," spoke out to express his sympathy. He shared that he understands how Chi Pu feels right now.

In the music industry, Erik remains a promising young singer. He participated in The Voice Kids Vietnam 2013 but is better known as a member of the boy band Monstar.

In 2016, Erik made a splash with the song "Sau tất cả" (After All), winning numerous domestic awards and earning a nomination at the Dedication Music Awards for "New Artist of the Year." Recently, the song "Ghen" (Jealousy), a collaboration between Erik and Min in a project by songwriter Khắc Hưng, also created a sensation and became a favorite among young audiences. Currently, Erik is gaining attention with the show "Perfect Couple - Romantic & Bolero," airing on VTV3 every Thursday.

But when he first started his career, singing live, he also received many mixed opinions about his voice. That was the starting point for Erik's empathy with Chi Pu's current "situation."

"Personally, I understand how Chi Pu feels right now. Because I was like her before. When I was a 17-year-old boy making my public debut, I was also criticized by the audience for having poor live performances, only having good looks, and so on. So I understand the feeling that Chi Pu is going through," Erik shared.

But after about two years of diligent study and progress, Erik said he has become much more confident in his singing abilities, so he predicts that time and practice will also help Chi Pu change.

"I think Chi Pu is just lacking a little confidence right now. With time, she can improve her skills, and I believe Chi Pu can absolutely succeed," Erik affirmed.

Without denying that he is a young singer heavily influenced by K-pop, Erik believes that K-pop has deeply permeated Vietnamese music, so the current market classification of professional, traditional singers from idol singers is understandable. Accordingly, he argues that even singers who barely know how to sing but still seriously invest in and meticulously craft their products are accepted by the audience. He believes that, in Vietnam, Chi Pu is currently an example of someone who dares to create and invest in a quality product like that.

"That's commendable. As for her abilities, I think Chi Pu needs time to improve herself. I know Chi Pu has dreamed of being a singer for a long time, and I believe that once she dares to do it, nothing can stop her. So, if anyone suggests banning her from singing, I think that's a bit excessive," the singer of "After All" expressed her opinion.
