(Baonghean.vn) - During days of intense cold and frost, people in the mountainous region of Quynh Luu (Nghe An) have to cover and warm their dairy cows.

During these intensely cold days with temperatures ranging from 15 to 17 degrees Celsius, Mr. Nguyen Van Hung in Quynh Thang commune is actively covering and warming nearly 20 of his family's dairy cows. Dairy cows are very sensitive to the weather, especially when the monsoon arrives; if they are not kept warm, they are very susceptible to colds and diseases.

"Since the cold weather arrived, I bought over 100 meters of plastic sheeting to wrap around the barn. Because this is a mountainous area, the temperature is lower than in the lowlands. Besides covering the barn, every evening my family has to light 2-3 bonfires to warm the herd of cows," Mr. Hung said.

Currently, there are more than 520 dairy cows in Quynh Luu district, mainly raised in mountainous communes such as Quynh Thang, Quynh Chau, and Quynh Tam.

According to local farmers, dairy cows are highly profitable livestock, so disease prevention is always a top priority, especially during the current cold weather. Each dairy cow, if well cared for and given a sufficient diet, can generate an income of approximately 300,000 VND per day. During cold weather, when temperatures drop, if the cow is not kept warm, milk production will decrease significantly.

Mr. Le Van Nga, Chairman of the People's Committee of Quynh Thang commune, said that during this time, the local authorities are directing livestock farmers to promptly cover and protect their animals; they are not allowed to let them graze in the fields and must stockpile feed. When livestock show signs of cold, they should go to the nearest veterinary facility to buy medicine for timely prevention.
