Despite the biting cold, rice planters still went to the fields.
(Baonghean.vn) - In the rice fields of Anh Son district, the spring rice planting season is underway. Despite the bitterly cold weather these days, people are still taking advantage of the opportunity to work as hired rice planters to earn extra income.
Despite the biting cold, from early morning, in the fields of Long Son and Khai Son communes, people are still busy planting rice for the spring crop.
According to Ms. Ha Thi Dan from Hamlet 11, Hoa Son Commune, because her family has little farmland and the planting season is earlier than in neighboring communes, she takes advantage of every opportunity to work as a hired rice planter. Rice planting is quite hard work because it requires bending over all day and immersing hands and feet in mud, especially on days when the temperature drops low. However, the pay is quite high, at 200,000 VND per day; after the planting season, Ms. Dan has a considerable amount of money to support her family.

Only by going to the fields can one truly understand the hardship and toil of the people who work as hired rice planters in this freezing weather. On the rice paddies, the women are still immersed in the cold water, their hands trembling and turning purple. Ms. Luong Thi Thuy said that for many years, every rice planting season she tries to finish her own rice fields quickly so she can go and work as a hired planter in other communes in the district.
Ms. Thuy's rice transplanting team consists of 7 people from the village. Usually, the landowners are familiar with them, so when the planting season arrives, they call and schedule a day to come and transplant rice. One person introduces another, and during peak days, the team has more work than they can handle. The rice transplanting season only lasts a short time, from 15 to 20 days, but the wages are quite high. After the transplanting season, each person earns a sum of money to prepare for the upcoming Tet holiday.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Toan from Hamlet 1/5, Cam Son Commune, said that this season she planted 5 sao (approximately 0.5 hectares) of rice. Because her family is short of manpower, she had to hire 4 people to transplant the seedlings in time for the season; it cost her nearly 1 million dong in labor costs after the harvest.
During the rice planting season in Anh Son, hundreds of people work as hired rice planters. Although it's hard work, especially on cold days, it doesn't require them to travel far, providing them with an additional source of income to support their lives.
