The US Navy's Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Donald Cook (DDG-75) is currently in the eastern Mediterranean, about 100km from the Syrian city of Tartus and nearly 90km from Tripoli in Libya, the source said.

News of the USS Donald Cook's presence comes amid tensions in Syria over a chemical weapons attack in Eastern Ghouta last week that killed dozens of people.

The US accused the Syrian military of being behind the attack. US President Donald Trump announced on April 9 that he would decide on a response to Syria within the next 24-48 hours.

Washington has not yet commented on information related to the USS Donald Cook.

Last April, President Trump ordered the launch of 59 Tomahawk cruise missiles at a Syrian air base after accusing Damascus of being behind a chemical attack on civilians. However, Syria denied the accusation.
