The source stated that the US Navy's Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer USS Donald Cook (DDG-75) is currently in the Eastern Mediterranean, approximately 100km from the Syrian city of Tartus and nearly 90km from Tripoli in Libya.
Information about the presence of the USS Donald Cook comes amid heightened tensions in Syria over the controversy surrounding last week's chemical weapons attack in Eastern Ghouta, which killed dozens of people.
The US accused the Syrian army of being behind the attack. On April 9, US President Donald Trump announced that he would decide on a response to Syria within the next 24-48 hours.
Washington has not yet commented on the information regarding the USS Donald Cook.
Last April, President Trump ordered the firing of 59 Tomahawk cruise missiles at a Syrian air base after accusing Damascus of being behind a chemical attack on civilians. However, Syria denied the accusation.
