Wild snakehead fish are extremely gluttonous, with firm meat, and are the prey that snakehead anglers (lure anglers) always want to conquer every time they leave the house. It is not only fishing but also a hobby, a sport loved by many young people.

A lure angler in Lam Dong said, “Compared to normal fishermen, snakehead fishers have a pretty leisurely time. We only need a fishing rod and a box containing a few fake baits to be able to go fishing.”

Lure fishing gear is quite simple and light.

Fishing gear only includes a small crossbody bag, a two-section rod clip, a bait box, a fishing reel box and a small folding knife.

Mr. Van Long - an experienced angler said, snakehead fish are quite bold predators, they often hide in small grass banks right next to the shore to wait for prey to swim by and then rush out to chase. Understanding this characteristic of theirs, anglers often throw bait along the grass banks right on the shore, it is very easy to get fish to bite.

The location close to the lake's edge, where there is a lot of grass, is where anglers often go hunting for fish.

Mr. Long said, it has been raining a lot these past few days but this morning it was sunny so the fish came out to feed. After only about 20 times of casting bait, Mr. Long saw movement, the hungry snakehead fish chasing the bait through the water. "You have to take it slow, they are just playing with the bait but not eating yet, wait until the bait is pulled right past their mouths and the fish will "bite" immediately", Mr. Long whispered.

As soon as he finished speaking, while reeling in the line, a splash of water came. Without haste, Mr. Long released the line, just 3 seconds later, the line was taut, he used his momentum to pull it hard, the fish was hooked. He slowly pulled the fish to the shore, a fish weighing about 0.8kg was on the shore.

Wild snakehead fish have firm, healthy meat and are extremely voracious.

“Fishing for snakehead fish is simple, but not all anglers know how to understand their habits and when to go fishing and when not to go. Snakehead fish are gluttonous, but they only eat in the early morning or at dusk. You should not go fishing during hot, sunny, or rainy weather because they rarely eat bait during this time,” Long revealed.

The cost for an angler to have enough fishing gear is quite cheap, but Mr. Long said that snakehead fishing gear bought once can be used for several years, so you should not be stingy with money but invest it all at once. Avoid buying equipment that is too cheap because "you get what you pay for", after only a few fishing trips you may have to replace it with new equipment.

With just a fishing rod and a box of fake bait, anglers can catch fish and bring them home.

What is needed for those who want to go fishing for snakehead fish is a fishing rod with a price of about 800 thousand VND or more is fine. A fishing reel, depending on the preferences and strengths of each person, will use a horizontal or vertical reel (with a price range of 600 - 900 thousand VND depending on the economic conditions of each person). A PE reel costs about 200 thousand, at least the angler should have two or more fake lures to be able to fish all terrains such as open water or lots of grass.

“There are some people who do not like to fish with fake baits, so they use single hooks and then hook live frogs to fish. However, doing so will waste bait, and sometimes there will be no bait left to go fishing. Nowadays, there are many fake bait products to serve fishermen, so it is very convenient and flexible to change baits,” said angler Van Long.

The fish came ashore after many times of throwing bait by the angler.

Usually, lure anglers often use horizontal reel fishing rods because this rod can throw far, with high accuracy. In particular, horizontal reels have a compact, flexible design, and light weight, so anglers can throw hundreds of times each time they go fishing. However, those who are new to horizontal reel fishing have difficulty throwing bait, this type of reel is very easy to tangle the line, and it can take newbies up to 2/3 of their time to untangle the line.

“What matters is my hobby, and when I come home tired from work, I want to take my fishing rod to the lake to relieve stress. Or on days off, I go fishing with friends at the lake, and when I catch fish, I grill it up and drink a few beers. There's nothing better,” Long confided.

Before there was a fishing rod, Mr. Long could catch fish with just a bamboo rod and fishing line.
