Bangkok gang shootout, one tourist killed

A shootout between two gangs in the Thai capital Bangkok left an Indian tourist waiting for a bus dead and four others injured.

The gunfight took placebetween two youth gangs in the central Pratunam district of Bangkok, an area that often attracts many tourists,AFPcited Thai police sources said.

Three young men carrying rifles had agreed to settle a dispute with their rivals after a nearby argument.Witnesses said about 20 people carrying pistols, knives and sticks surrounded the three young men, prompting them to open fire.

A group of Indian tourists were waiting for a bus at the time of the shooting. Gakhrejr Dheeraj, 42, an Indian tourist, died in hospital from gunshot wounds. Four others were injured. Thai police initially said Keovongsa Thonekeo, a Laotian tourist, was also killed in the shooting but later said he was still alive.

Police have not yet established what type of gun was used, but said AK-47 shell casings were found at the scene. "We are looking for the gang members," Bangkok police spokesman Krissana Pattanacharoen said.
