The pump, which doesn't use electricity, automatically lifts clean water to a height of nearly 1,300 meters.
The pressurized pipeline system for the non-electric water supply module uses a pump-turbine combination technology with a capacity of 1,500 m3/day.
Scientists from the Vietnam Institute of Geological Sciences and Minerals and the Institute of Water and River Basin Management - Water Resources Management and Environmental Engineering (KIT) of the Federal Republic of Germany have researched and installed a pressurized pipeline system for a non-electric water supply module (PAT technology) in Dong Van district, Ha Giang province.
Thanks to PAT technology, water is transported from the Seo Ho hydroelectric plant (705 m altitude) to a reservoir located in Ma U (1,250 m altitude), and then distributed to Dong Van town and neighboring communes.

The reason electricity wasn't needed is because the research team utilized the pressure difference of the stored water column (H) to rotate the turbine system. When the turbine rotates, it generates a certain amount of kinetic energy.
This energy source can be converted into electricity at hydroelectric power plants. However, in reality, that kinetic energy is transferred to another turbine system directly connected to a high-pressure pumping system. This pumping system then pumps a portion of the pressurized water to higher elevations.

PAT pumping technology does not rely on external energy sources; it also allows for electricity generation to power lighting and the main operation of the pumping and water supply systems, and can be applied to hydropower.
Thanks to this system, residents of Dong Van town and surrounding areas have been supplied with clean water (more than 1,500 m3/day and night) completely automatically, relying on water power without using any other energy source.
The project "Research and development of sustainable exploitation and utilization technologies for limestone resources in Vietnam's mountainous regions, with pilot application in some areas of the Dong Van Karst Plateau Global Geopark, Ha Giang" is part of the International Cooperation Program on Science and Technology implemented under the Protocol managed by the Ministry of Science and Technology.
