US creates new nuclear weapons to "restrain" Russia from "escalating"
The United States needs low-yield nuclear weapons to deter Russia. The United States has no plans to lower the threshold for using them, said David Trachtenberg, the Pentagon's deputy assistant secretary of defense.
“The reason why we decided to go down the path of low-yield nuclear weapons is because we were looking at what the Russians were doing, and this was very concerning,” Mr. Trachtenberg told a congressional hearing.
According to him, the US's concerns are caused by Russia's "escalation for de-escalation" doctrine, which provides for the limited use of nuclear weapons in military conflicts with the use of conventional weapons.
The United States, as in previous years, does not and does not plan to fulfill its obligation not to be the first to use nuclear weapons, Trachtenberg confirmed.
