The US is creating new nuclear weapons to "contain" Russia's "escalation."
The United States needs low-yield nuclear weapons to deter Russia. The U.S. has no plans to reduce its use threshold, said David Trachtenberg, assistant deputy chief of the Pentagon.
"The reason why we decided to go down the path of low-yield nuclear weapons is because we are looking at what the Russians are doing, and this is of great interest," Trachtenberg said at a congressional hearing.
According to him, the US concern is caused by Russia's "escalation for de-escalation" doctrine, which stipulates the limited use of nuclear weapons in military conflicts as opposed to the use of conventional weapons.
The United States, as in previous years, has not fulfilled and has no plans to fulfill its obligation not to be the first party to use nuclear weapons, Trachtenberg confirmed.
