Expert: Possible US-Russia naval clash and NATO failure?
The United States should not overdo exercises on Russia's borders, as Washington is underestimating the risks of such exercises, according to Lyle Goldstein, a professor at the China Maritime Studies Institute at the US Naval War College.
According to Professor Lyle Goldstein, in the waters of the Sea of Azov, as well as along the Black Sea coast, there are at least 18 thousand torpedoes from World War II. If NATO ships accidentally detonate one of them, they could provoke a naval clash with Russia, leading to a complete defeat for the coalition forces.
In this case, NATO has some political value at “phase zero”, but in practice, it cannot play a significant role in the real conflict.
The United States was lucky, because according to the Montreux Convention, American aircraft carriers cannot pass through the Turkish Straits, because otherwise they would be very quickly destroyed by Russian submarines, missile systems, missile boats and sea-based aircraft, equipped with anti-ship missiles, such as the new "Kinzhal" complex.
Improving the US's chances can only happen if Washington revises its strategy and begins to vigorously develop submarine weapons, as well as the latest drones.
