The case of Ms. Tr. in Yen Dinh district is very special, because she is the first case of nCoV infection in Thanh Hoa and also the first Vietnamese person in our country to be cured of the disease. That shows that provincial hospitals can completely cure this disease.

Leaders of Thanh Hoa Provincial General Hospital presented flowers to congratulate the female patient on her discharge.

A patient leaving the hospital safely is a joy for the doctor.

Speaking to the press, Meritorious Doctor, Specialist Doctor 2 Le Van Sy, Director of Thanh Hoa General Hospital, expressed: Every patient who is safely discharged from the hospital is the joy of all of us doctors. But the case of patient Tr. in Yen Dinh district is very special, because this is the first case of nCoV infection in Thanh Hoa and also the first Vietnamese person in our country to be cured of the disease, this shows that the treatment capacity of lower-level hospitals like our provincial hospitals is completely capable of curing this disease. This is very helpful for the response plan to the epidemic levels, especially when the epidemic spreads and develops complicatedly as the scenario of the Ministry of Health.

According to Dr. Le Van Sy, Ms. Tr. and 8 workers of the Japanese Nihonplas Company were sent to attend an advanced training course in Dong Tay Ho District, Wuhan City, China about 2 months ago. On January 17, the patient returned to Vietnam by air via Noi Bai International Airport, then was picked up by the Company's car and taken to the Company's headquarters in Thien Ke Commune, Binh Son District, Vinh Phuc Province. On January 23, the patient took a bus to Giap Bat Bus Station (Hanoi) and traveled by bus to her home in Dinh Hoa Commune, Yen Dinh, Thanh Hoa.

At 10:00 p.m. the same day, the patient showed symptoms of respiratory tract infection, fever, cough, and chest tightness. At 1:00 p.m. on January 24, the patient was taken by his family to Yen Dinh District General Hospital for examination, then transferred to the Tropical Diseases Department, Thanh Hoa Provincial General Hospital for treatment.

Patient's condition upon admission to the Department of Tropical Diseases, Thanh Hoa Hospital: In a conscious state, high fever, temperature 39.2°C, severe cough, chest tightness, mild shortness of breath, pulse 100 times/minute, blood pressure 120/70 mmHg, immediately upon admission the patient was taken to the isolation treatment area in accordance with regulations and protective measures were taken for the patient, family members and medical staff of the Department of Tropical Diseases - Thanh Hoa Provincial General Hospital directly examining and treating the patient.

Doctor Le Van Sy advised patient Tr. before discharge.

Immediately upon receiving information from Yen Dinh District General Hospital, Thanh Hoa Hospital urgently initiated steps to prepare adequate facilities, equipment and arrange a convenient isolation treatment area for examination and treatment of patients at the Tropical Diseases Department.

The hospital has reported to the Department of Health and the Provincial Center for Disease Control to coordinate in taking samples and sending them to the Central Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology for diagnostic testing, and at the same time implementing measures to monitor and prevent infection for all medical staff involved in serving patients. Doctors and nurses participating in the treatment and care of patients examine and closely monitor the patient's disease progression every day to detect early all possible complications for timely and effective treatment.

After 4 days of intensive care and treatment according to the treatment regimen and instructions of the Ministry of Health, by the afternoon of January 28 (the 4th day of Tet), the patient had no more fever, no difficulty breathing, reduced cough, and all vital signs were within normal limits. By the afternoon of January 30, the Provincial Center for Disease Control announced that the patient's test results were positive for the new strain of coronavirus (nCoV). On the morning of January 31, the Provincial Center for Disease Control took a second sample for the Corona virus test and by the afternoon of February 2, the test results were negative for nCoV. The patient was discharged from the hospital on the morning of February 3, and we waived all treatment costs for the patient.

Lower level hospitals can completely cure nCoV disease.

Proactively prepare comprehensive plans

Doctor Le Van Sy shared: Our experience is to proactively prepare a comprehensive epidemic prevention plan in terms of facilities, infrastructure, equipment, as well as human resources for epidemic prevention.

In addition, the hospital also received timely encouragement and direction from provincial leaders, local health sector leaders, and strong direction from the Government, timely direction and guidance from the Ministry of Health as well as support from leading experts when required.

Therefore, as soon as there was information about the complicated developments of the epidemic in neighboring countries, with the possibility of spreading back to the country, the hospital made a plan and regularly updated information about the epidemic; when there were domestic cases and suspected cases appearing in the area, the hospital seriously implemented the instructions of the Government, the Ministry of Health, the Provincial People's Committee and the Department of Health.

From the afternoon of January 24 (ie the 30th day of the Lunar New Year), the hospital organized training on the Ministry of Health's guidelines for diagnosing and treating acute pneumonia caused by the new strain of Corona virus (nCoV) for all medical staff of the Department of Tropical Diseases to promptly respond to diagnosis and treatment of the first suspected cases admitted to the hospital.

The Steering Committee has developed a scenario with response plans at Thanh Hoa Provincial General Hospital according to 4 epidemic levels, preparing conditions for facilities, medicines, chemicals, medical equipment, human resources, logistics to ensure admission, isolation, treatment, and management of cases at the hospital according to the 4 on-site principles; establishing Rapid Response Mobile Teams and External Emergency Teams to provide professional support to medical facilities in the province when requested.
