Special Announcement: Former General Secretary Le Kha Phieu Passes Away

ComradeLe Kha PhieuBorn on December 27, 1931, in Dong Khe commune, Dong Son district, Thanh Hoa province; residing at 7-36-C1 Ly Nam De Street, Cua Dong ward, Hoan Kiem district, Hanoi. Joined the revolutionary movement in 1947; became a Party member on June 19, 1949. Member of the Central Committee of the Party for the 7th and 8th terms; Secretary of the Central Committee for the 7th term; Member of the Politburo for the 7th and 8th terms; Standing Member and Permanent Member of the Politburo for the 8th term; General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Party for the 8th term (from December 1997 to April 2001). Member of the National Assembly for the 9th and 10th terms.

After a period of illness, despite the dedicated care and attention from the Party, the State, a team of professors and doctors, and his family, due to his advanced age and severe illness, he passed away at 2:52 AM on August 7, 2020 (corresponding to the 18th day of the 6th lunar month of the Year of the Rat), at his home, at the age of 89.

With over 70 years of revolutionary activity, Comrade has made immense contributions to the glorious revolutionary cause of the Party and the nation. He has been awarded the Gold Star Order, the 70-Year Party Membership Badge, and many other prestigious medals and awards from Vietnam and internationally by the Party and the State.

His passing is a great loss to our Party, State, and people.

To commemorate Comrade Le Kha Phieu, the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam, the National Assembly of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, the President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, the Government of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, and the Central Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front have decided to organize the funeral of Comrade Le Kha Phieu with the ceremony of a State funeral.

BIOGRAPHICAL SUMMARY
Comrade Le Kha Phieu - former General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam

ComradeLe Kha PhieuBorn on December 27, 1931; birthplace: Dong Khe Commune, Dong Son District, Thanh Hoa Province. Permanent residence: 7-36-C1 Ly Nam De Street, Cua Dong Ward, Hoan Kiem District, Hanoi City. Joined revolutionary activities in 1947; became a Party member on June 19, 1949.

From 1947 to 1949, he taught literacy classes in the commune. In June 1949, he was admitted to the Communist Party of Vietnam, in charge of propaganda work and serving as the Chief of the Party Branch Office in the commune.

From May 1950 to August 1954, Comrade enlisted in the army, serving as a soldier, then holding positions as Squad Leader, Platoon Leader, Deputy Political Commissar of the Company, Political Commissar of the Company, Regiment 66, Division 304.

From September 1954 to March 1955, Comrade attended the first intermediate-level military and political training course.

From March 1955 to March 1958, Comrade successively held the positions of Head of the Regimental Organization Subcommittee, Battalion Political Commissar; Deputy Head and then Head of Political Affairs of Regiment 66, Division 304.

In April 1958, Comrade was a student at the Central-Level Political School.

From June 1961 to 1966, Comrade successively held the positions of Deputy Head of the Personnel Department and then Head of the Organization Department, Political Office of the 304th Division; subsequently, he served as Deputy Political Commissar and then Political Commissar of the 9th Regiment, 304th Division, Right Bank Military Region, and a member of the Division Party Committee.

In July 1967, Comrade joined the Tri Thien battlefield, serving as Political Commissar of Regiment 9. In January 1968, he also became the Regimental Commander of Regiment 9.

In 1970, he served as Head of the Organization Department of the Tri Thien Military Region.

From October 1971 to February 1974, he served as Deputy Head of Political Affairs of the Tri Thien Military Region.

In March 1974, he served as the Political Commissar of the Tri Thien Military Region (later the 2nd Army Corps) and a member of the Army Corps Party Committee.

In February 1978, Comrade served as the Head of Political Affairs and then as the Deputy Political Commissar and Head of Political Affairs of Military Region 9.

In August 1980, he served as Deputy Commander for Political Affairs and Head of Political Affairs of Military Region 9, and was elected to the Standing Committee and then Deputy Secretary of the Military Region Party Committee.

In March 1983, he held the position of Head of Political Affairs of Military Region 9.

In April 1984, Comrade served as the Head of Political Affairs of the 719th Command, and was promoted to the rank of Major General.

In 1986, he served as Deputy Commander for Political Affairs and Head of Political Affairs of the 719th Command, and later as a member and then Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of the 719th Command.

In June 1988, he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant General.

In August 1988, he became Deputy Head of the General Political Department of the Vietnam People's Army (in charge of organization, personnel, and security).

At the 7th National Party Congress (June 1991), Comrade was elected to the Central Committee of the Party, assigned to be the Head of the General Political Department of the Vietnam People's Army, and a Standing Member of the Central Military Party Committee (now the Central Military Commission).

At the Third Plenum of the Central Executive Committee, Seventh Term, Comrade was elected to the Central Secretariat of the Party.

In June 1992, he was promoted to the rank of General.

At the mid-term national conference of the Central Committee of the 7th Party Congress (January 1994), Comrade was elected to the Politburo.

At the 8th National Party Congress (June 1996), Comrade was re-elected as a member of the Central Committee of the Party and was elected by the Central Committee to the Politburo. He was appointed to the Standing Committee of the Politburo and assigned to serve as the Standing Member of the Politburo and concurrently Head of the Central Internal Political Security Committee.

At the Fourth Plenum of the Central Committee, Eighth Term (December 1997), Comrade was elected General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam and Secretary of the Central Military Party Committee (now the Central Military Commission).

He was a member of the Central Committee of the Party for the 7th and 8th terms; Secretary of the Central Committee for the 7th term; member of the Politburo for the 7th and 8th terms; Standing Member and Permanent Member of the Politburo for the 8th term; General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Party for the 8th term (from December 1997 to April 2001). He was also a Member of the National Assembly for the 9th and 10th terms.

In October 2006, Comrade retired from his position as per regulations.

Due to his many outstanding contributions and achievements to the revolutionary cause of the Party and the nation, Comrade was awarded the Gold Star Order; the 70-Year Party Membership Badge and many other prestigious medals and awards from Vietnam and internationally by the Party and the State.

Comrade's funeralLe Kha PhieuIt was organized as a state funeral.

The coffin of Comrade Le Kha Phieu is laid in state at the National Funeral Home, No. 5 Tran Thanh Tong Street, Hanoi.

The memorial service for Comrade Le Kha Phieu will be held at the National Funeral Home, No. 5 Tran Thanh Tong Street, Hanoi, from 8:00 AM on August 14, 2020 to 12:00 PM on August 15, 2020.

The memorial service for Comrade Le Kha Phieu will be held at 12:30 PM on August 15, 2020, at the National Funeral Home, No. 5 Tran Thanh Tong Street, Hanoi. The burial will take place at 2:00 PM on the same day at Mai Dich Cemetery, Hanoi.

At the same time, memorial services for Comrade Le Kha Phieu were also held at the Thong Nhat Hall in Ho Chi Minh City and at Hall 25B, Quang Trung Street, Thanh Hoa City, Thanh Hoa Province.

Vietnam Television and Vietnam Radio will broadcast live coverage of the memorial service, funeral ceremony, and burial of Comrade Le Kha Phieu in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and Thanh Hoa province.

During the two days of national mourning (August 14th and 15th, 2020), government offices and public places flew flags at half-mast and suspended all entertainment activities.
