Nguyen Van Thai and four accomplices pretended to be telecommunications officers and called many people to inform them of winning prizes, appropriating more than 500 million VND.

On February 3, Thai (24 years old) and his two brothers Nguyen Tien Tu (27 years old), Nguyen Van Hoan (36 years old), Duong Huu Hai; Le Xuan Cuong (28 years old, all residing in Lam Hop commune, Ky Anh district) were prosecuted and detained by Ha Tinh city police for the crime ofCheatappropriation of property, according to Article 174 of the 2015 Penal Code.

According to the investigation results, at the end of October 2020, three Thai brothers bought many junk SIM cards, pretended to be telecommunications officers and called many people, informing them that the subscribers had won motorbikes, savings books and cash. The suspects asked to complete the documents, transfer fees and registration fees to online card game accounts to receive the prizes.

When the victim trusted him to transfer money, they cut off contact. Thai then asked Cuong to transfer money from his game account to his bank account to withdraw cash, paying him 35% of the amount he had appropriated. When receiving the "kickback", Cuong did not meet Thai directly but asked Hai to do the transaction to avoid revealing his identity.
Early January, while cheating avictimIn Thach Ha district, after appropriating nearly 70 million VND, Thai's group was tracked down and arrested by the police.
Authorities determined that, using similar methods, the five suspects had committed dozens of scams in many provinces and cities, appropriating more than 500 million VND to split and spend.
