Cuba has a new First Secretary of the Communist Party, replacing Raul Castro.
The Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba elected President Miguel Diaz Canel as First Secretary at its 8th Congress, held from April 16 to 19.
President Miguel Diaz Canel, 61, has been elected First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba, replacing his predecessor, General Raul Castro, who had previously announced he would not accept a nomination to join the party's top leadership body.

General Raul Castro emphasized that Miguel Diaz Canel was not chosen randomly, but rather was a carefully considered and well-qualified candidate to assume important positions.
According to General Raul Castro, Miguel Diaz Canel has spent 15 years serving in various positions and, over the past three years, has contributed to unity and cohesion within the Party, State, and Government.
Thus, from April 19th, Miguel Diaz Canel will be the First Secretary of the Communist Party andPresident of Cuba.
In its final session on April 19, the Cuban Communist Party also announced the list of its 96-member Central Committee, including a 14-member Politburo and a 6-member Secretariat.
