Cuba has a new First Secretary of the Communist Party to replace Raul Castro.
The Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba elected President Miguel Diaz Canel as First Secretary at its 8th Congress held from April 16 to April 19.
President Miguel Diaz Canel, 61 years old, was elected as First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba, replacing his predecessor, General Raul Castro, who had previously announced that he would not accept the nomination to join the Party's supreme leadership body.

General Raul Castro emphasized that Mr. Miguel Diaz Canel was not a random choice but a considered choice and was qualified to take on important positions.
According to General Raul Castro, Mr. Miguel Diaz Canel has had 15 years of challenges in different positions and in the past 3 years has contributed to solidarity and unity in the agencies of the Party, State and Government.
Thus, Mr. Miguel Diaz Canel from April 19 will be the First Secretary of the Communist Party andPresident of Cuba.
In the final meeting on April 19, the Communist Party of Cuba also announced the list of the Central Executive Committee consisting of 96 members, including the Politburo of 14 members and the Secretariat of 6 members./.
