(Baonghean.vn) - 2021 marks the 90th anniversary of the heroic martyr Ly Tu Trong, the first communist youth union member to declare before the colonial court, "The only path for youth is the revolutionary path; there can be no other path," and his heroic sacrifice.

Following the directives of the Central Committee of the Vietnam Youth Union, and in conjunction with young people nationwide, the Standing Committee of the Nghe An Provincial Youth Union launched a high-intensity political campaign with the theme "The Spirit of Ly Tu Trong - The Aspiration of Youth" and commemorated the 90th anniversary of the sacrifice of hero Ly Tu Trong (November 21, 1931 - November 21, 2021).
This is an opportunity for Youth Union officials, members, and young people throughout the province to learn more about the life and exemplary sacrifice of the hero Ly Tu Trong for the revolutionary cause; thereby continuing to cultivate revolutionary ideals, patriotic traditions, and faith in the revolutionary path chosen by the Party, President Ho Chi Minh, and previous generations of youth. At the same time, it promotes the emulation movement in labor, study, and training among Youth Union officials, members, and young people, fostering the role and responsibility of the younger generation in the current period of national construction and defense.

Heroic martyr Lý Tự Trọng, whose real name was Lê Hữu Trọng, was born in 1914 in Thailand. His ancestral home was in Việt Xuyên commune, now Việt Tiến commune, Thạch Hà district.
In 1926, in Thailand, the young man was one of eight people selected by Ho Tung Mau, on behalf of the Vietnam Revolutionary Youth Association, to be sent to Guangzhou (China) for training to build a communist organization in Vietnam later on.
In late 1926, in China, leader Nguyen Ai Quoc changed Le Huu Trong's name to Ly Tu Trong and included him in the "Vietnamese Young Pioneers" group. He was then sent to study and served as a liaison for the General Headquarters of the Vietnamese Revolutionary Youth League in Guangzhou.
In mid-1929, Ly Tu Trong was sent back to Vietnam to act as a liaison and mobilize young people to establish the Communist Youth League in Saigon-Chợ Lớn. In February 1931, at a rally commemorating the first anniversary of the Yen Bai Uprising, when the French colonialists arrived, Ly Tu Trong drew his gun and shot dead the secret agent Le Grand to protect the speaker Phan Boi Chau, who was giving a speech in Laren Square. He was immediately arrested, imprisoned, and tortured. Unable to extract any secret information, the French colonialists held a trial and sentenced Ly Tu Trong to death at the young age of 17.
