"A dead battery" is a situation that most scooter users have encountered at some point. However, not everyone knows how to handle this problem, especially women.

Many users, especially women, who ride scooters occasionally encounter situations where the lights won't turn on, the horn won't work, or the engine won't even start. These are common symptoms when the battery is dead; in other words, the battery is damaged or completely discharged. So, what should you do in this situation?

How important is the battery in a car?

First, it's important to understand that the battery is the power source for the vehicle, supplying electricity to other components such as the horn, lights, and especially the starting system. Therefore, when the battery is dead, these components will not function, and even with newer scooter models that don't have a kick starter, the engine won't start at all.

The battery plays a very important role in scooters.

Reasons why scooter batteries run out

There are many reasons why scooter batteries run out. The first and most common is that owners leave their scooters unused for extended periods. This may sound illogical, but it's a reality. Modern scooters are equipped with many smart electronic components and devices. Therefore, when the scooter is not in use, some of these smart devices operate and consume power. This is why many scooters left unused for a long time will experience battery drain.

Another very common reason for a dead battery in a vehicle is the owner's forgetfulness in forgetting to turn off the engine. Many people believe that when the engine is off, other devices will also stop working. But this is a misconception. Many modern scooters are equipped with daytime running lights and smart devices, so even when the vehicle is stopped and the engine is off, devices such as lights and the instrument panel continue to operate and consume power from the battery. Repeatedly forgetting to turn off the engine will lead to a dead battery and the inability to start the engine.

Even when the engine is off, the electrical devices in the car are still running, which is a common reason for a dead battery.

In addition, several other factors can cause a scooter's battery to drain quickly, such as adding or modifying electrical devices like high-powered headlights, decorative colored lights, LED taillights, etc. These devices will directly draw power from the battery, causing it to drain faster.

What should you do when your scooter battery runs out?

As mentioned, most modern scooters no longer have a kick starter. Therefore, if the battery is dead, the scooter may not start. So what should you do?

First, when a car shows signs of a dead battery (the ignition key is turned but the electronic display doesn't light up, the lights don't turn on, etc.), the driver should not try to start it repeatedly. This will only waste time and make the situation worse. Instead, the first thing to do is to "rescue" the car's battery by connecting it to the battery of another car that still has power.

The best way to deal with a dead car battery is to recharge it or replace it if the battery is degraded.

This is considered the most feasible way to jump-start your car battery yourself. However, to do this, you need to have jumper cables ready and know how to locate the battery on your car (at the front of the car or under the footrest for some newer models). Then, connect the wires according to the correct positive/negative terminals and wait for about 5-10 minutes before restarting the engine. Note that after successfully starting the car, remember to keep the engine idling for another 10 minutes so that the engine can further charge the battery.

If you are unable to jump-start your vehicle yourself, you need to take it to a repair shop or motorcycle dealership so that a mechanic or technician can recharge the battery. Typically, a full charge takes about an hour or longer, depending on the type of battery.

If your battery is severely degraded or even completely dead, you need to replace it. The price of a replacement battery for most scooter models currently ranges from 300,000 to 500,000 VND.
