This was a match where Germany had to score to have any hope of advancing. Costa Rica's surprise victory over Japan gave Hansi Flick and his team a lot of motivation. However, Spain was still the team that had the first chance to open the scoring.
In the 7th minute, Neuer's goal shook after Dani Olmo's shot, signaling a day of hard work. But the hard work was for both goalkeepers. Germany, with nothing to lose, rushed forward to press Spain very hard.
Like the match against Japan, Germany had many shots but Gnabry, Rudiger and Musiala failed to take advantage of their opportunities. In the 40th minute, the Germans put the ball into Unai Simon's net but the goal was disallowed because Rudiger was offside. The first half ended 0-0.
But the first 45 minutes were just a warm-up for the great drama in the second half. Spain showed their cards before Enrique replaced Morata with an ineffective Ferrran Torres.
