This was a match where Germany absolutely needed points to have any hope of progressing. Costa Rica's unexpected victory over Japan provided a huge boost of motivation for Hansi Flick's team. However, Spain still had the first chance to open the scoring.
In the 7th minute, Neuer's goal was rattled by a shot from Dani Olmo, signaling a tough day ahead. But the hard work was for both goalkeepers. Germany, with nothing left to lose, pressed Spain intensely.
Similar to the match against Japan, Germany had many shots on goal, but Gnabry, Rudiger, and Musiala all failed to capitalize on their opportunities. In the 40th minute, the Germans finally put the ball into Unai Simon's net, but the goal was disallowed because Rudiger was offside. The first half ended 0-0.
But the first 45 minutes were just the warm-up for the drama in the second half. Spain revealed their hand before Enrique substituted Morata for the ineffective Ferran Torres. Just over 5 minutes after coming on, Morata made his mark by taking advantage of Alba's cross and finishing subtly to open the scoring.

At this point, Germany had nothing left to lose. In the 70th minute, coach Flick brought on three new players, most notably striker Fullkrug and winger Sane. Sane's appearance increased the speed and unpredictability of Germany's attacks.
But Fullkrug was the most effective player when his powerful shot after Musiala's breakaway in the 83rd minute gave Simon no chance to save it.

The score remained 1-1 until the final whistle. Both sides were temporarily satisfied with the point they earned. In the final match, Spain only needed a draw against Japan to guarantee qualification, while Germany had to beat Costa Rica by at least 8 goals to secure their place in the Round of 16.
