(Baonghean.vn) - These days, in the fields along the Lam River in Chau Nhan Commune (Hung Nguyen), earthworms are emerging from the ground. Locals call it “heavenly gift” because this valuable commodity makes people pocket millions of dong every night.

The season of rươi starts from September to November of the lunar calendar every year, each month there are a few days when rươi appears in large numbers, usually in the evening or at midnight. In the photo is a rice field in Phu Xuan hamlet, this is the field with the largest rươi yield in Chau Nhan commune. Photo: Dinh Tuyen

At around 6 p.m., the people of Phu Xuan hamlet, hamlet 7, hamlet 8 had prepared buckets, basins, nets, etc. to sit and watch in the fields, everyone eagerly waiting for a big catch of earthworms. Photo: Dinh Tuyen

In the corner of each household's field, there is a basket to catch the worms. When the tide recedes, the worms will follow the water flow and get caught in the basket. The worm hunter must keep an eye on the net in the corner of his field to harvest. Every 10-15 minutes, the people empty the basket. Photo: Dinh Tuyen

In the past, when the worms were all over the place, the whole village would go out to collect them. In recent years, the value of the worms has increased, and families with fields of worms have asserted their "sovereignty" by using nets to block them from reaching other families' fields. Mr. Pham Van Loi - a resident of Phu Xuan hamlet said: People here cultivate rice entirely with manure and especially do not use pesticides, because doing so will affect the reproduction of earthworms underground. For people with fields along the Lam River, growing rice is only a sideline while earthworms are the main source of income because on nice days when the earthworms grow a lot, the income is equal to the money from a ton of rice. Mr. Cao Van Dang and his nephew in Phu Xuan hamlet were happy because today they harvested quite a lot of earthworms. Mr. Dang said: Catching earthworms in the fields is erratic; some nights we can catch dozens of kilos, but other nights we can only catch a few ounces, and we have to go and collect each earthworm, which is extremely difficult. At a familiar location in Hamlet 7, Chau Nhan Commune, around 11pm, when the water recedes, the worms are scooped up and traders come here to buy them at a price of 350-380 thousand VND/kg. In this area, each night when the worms come up, each household can collect at least 3-4kg, some households can collect about 50kg, and sell them for tens of millions of VND. Photo: Dinh Tuyen
