US tanks and combat vehicles began arriving at the Dutch port of Vlissingen on January 11, en route to Poland and Lithuania as part of NATO's efforts to reinforce its eastern flank. "About 1,250 pieces of military equipment are arriving at the port," said Colonel Robert Kellam, the US commander in charge of the operation.
Vehicles included M-1 Abrams tanks and Bradley fighting vehicles from the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division at Fort Hood, Texas.
After Russia launched a war in Ukraine last February, NATO has been strengthening its battle groups in countries from the Baltic Sea in the north to the Black Sea in the south.
In December 2022, the US transferred about 700 combat vehicles to Poland, including Abrams tanks. This was done under the "Atlantic Resolve" program. The program began in 2014 to increase the US presence in Europe. Under the program, some parts of the US Army send separate units to Europe to deploy in countries on NATO's eastern flank.
Moscow has repeatedly noted that NATO is confrontational. Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov previously called the alliance's actions in Iraq, Libya and the former Yugoslavia a tragedy, where the right to life of people was trampled on by NATO "in the most brutal and illegal way." At the same time, as the press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov stressed, the expansion of the bloc will not bring greater security to Europe.
